Citizen Science

We are recruiting citizen science volunteers to contribute to our project, by taking regular water level measurements from their local rivers in 2023. These measurements will be taken using the CrowdWater App, a smartphone App developed by the University of Zurich, and used by citizen scientists to monitor rivers throughout Europe.

Monitoring of Irish rivers using the CrowdWater App is due to commence in March 2023. If you are interested in volunteering for this project, please contact us using the form at the bottom of this page.

We held webinars in December 2022, to provide an overview of the project, and information on what is required of citizen scientists who volunteer for the project. A recorded version of the webinar is available on YouTube here. A short section from the webinar held on 9th of December 2022, which provides advice about selecting a site to monitor with the CrowdWater App, and more detailed information about how to check if that site has associated flow data, is available on YouTube here.

There are two short videos demonstrating how to set up a new site, and how to take measurements at a site, available on the CrowdWater YouTube Channel. We have also put together a short video with a practical demonstration of the CrowdWater App at an Irish river site. This video includes information about how to set up a virtual staff gauge monitoring site, and how to take measurements at that site. This video is available on YouTube here.

You can also read/download a document containing information about setting up, and taking measurements at, a monitoring site here:
